SAWA means "together" in Arabic. This name was introduced by some of our community’s Syrian refugees to represent our common humanity and mutual friendship. This is the fundamental value at the core of SAWA.

We are a community of refugees and volunteers who have been working together in the Greater Hartford area for the last several years. Together, we have gained experience with a wide array of  resettlement issues during various stages in the process and the next steps after. Here are some of the guiding questions that we have developed together as a community:

  • What is the experience of people coming to the US as refugees?

  • What strengths already exist among us?

  • What resources are needed to support each other?

  • How can we come together and help each other?

  • How can we include all of the members of the community, leaving nobody behind?

We aim to support individuals and families from all nationalities who are refugees in the Greater Hartford area.
