Virtual Tutoring Highlight

Tutoring with SAWA over the pandemic was an incredibly meaningful experience. In a time where everyone was separated, I looked forward to my hour of tutoring each week. My student and I were able to bond virtually over our shared love of drawing. We filled our sketchbooks with drawings of tigers and dogs, practiced fractions and division, and learned more and more about each other. We continued to maintain the relationship through letter writing and even got to briefly meet in person when it was safe enough. SAWA allowed me to not only help a student who needed extra support but to make a new friend at a time when friendship was extra important.

COVID RELIEF

Because of our personal relationship with the refugee community and our up-to date needs assessment, we were able to quickly assess and prepare for the effects of the COVID crisis on local families. Some families were struggling before the pandemic and then many employed in the service industries were laid off. Our crisis relief has already responded to food insecurity and rent assistance. With our caring volunteers, we’ll continue to monitor family needs and continue to fundraise and apply for relief grants.

EDUCATION

Strengthening educational opportunities for refugees is an important goal for SAWA. We help adult refugees who want to strengthen their English skills, to acquire high school diplomas, and to pursue college. We facilitate tutoring opportunities for children to help them catch up to grade-level work and to experience educational enrichment activities. Our virtual tutoring program with area high school teens and college students has been very successful.
